Privacy notice
How HandySums handles personal data. Last updated: 20 October 2026.
Who is responsible for your data
HandySums is run by George Calder, trading as HandySums, who is the data controller for the personal data described in this notice. You can contact us about anything in this notice at [email protected].
Calculator figures — nothing is sent or stored
Our calculators run entirely in your web browser on your own device. The figures you type in are not sent to HandySums or anyone else, are not stored in a database and are not logged. If you use “Copy summary” or “Print / Save as PDF”, that happens on your own device.
Email sign-up
The only personal data we collect is your email address, and only if you choose to enter it in our email sign-up form.
- Why we use it: to send you emails about new HandySums calculators and CIS tips. The email list is for updates and tips only — it is not a refund-check or advice service.
- Lawful basis: your consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw your consent at any time by clicking “unsubscribe” in any of our emails or by emailing us. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything we did before you withdrew it.
- Confirming your sign-up: after you sign up you may be asked to confirm your address by clicking a link in an email. Our email provider may also record technical details of your sign-up, such as the date and time, the page you signed up on and your IP address, as a record of your consent and to prevent abuse.
- Email activity: our emails may use our email provider’s standard open and click tracking, which tells us whether an email was opened and which links were clicked. We use this only to understand what is useful.
- How long we keep it: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. If you unsubscribe, we may keep a minimal record that you unsubscribed so that we don’t email you again.
- Sharing: we do not sell your email address, and we do not pass your details to accountants, advertisers or anyone else, other than the service providers below who process it on our behalf.
Who processes your data for us
- Kit (ConvertKit LLC), our email service provider, stores the email list and sends our emails. Kit is based in the United States, so your email address is transferred outside the UK. Kit relies on appropriate safeguards for these international transfers, such as standard contractual clauses. See Kit’s privacy policy.
- Cloudflare hosts this website (Cloudflare Pages) and forwards email sent to our [email protected] address. Like any web host, it processes basic technical information such as your IP address and browser type to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
Analytics and cookies
This site does not use analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and our pages do not set any cookies themselves. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, may set strictly necessary security cookies to protect the site from bots and abuse; these do not track you for advertising and do not need your consent. If your sign-up is completed on Kit’s own page (for example, if your browser can’t send it from ours), Kit may set its own essential cookies on its website.
If we ever add analytics or other non-essential cookies, we will update this notice and ask for your consent first where the law requires it.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018) you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it if it is wrong;
- ask us to delete it;
- ask us to restrict how we use it, or object to our use of it;
- ask for your data in a portable format; and
- withdraw your consent at any time.
To use any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk.
